The Career Profile of a School Psychologist

A school psychologist is educated in the administrative, legal and ethical codes of their professions and preparation and areas such as:

A school psychologist helps adolescence and children succeed emotionally, socially, and academically. They work with other professionals, parents, guardians, and educators to produce supportive, healthy, safe learning environments for students that help strengthen school and home connections. A school psychologist is highly trained in education and psychology. The psychologist also works towards improving district wide and school support systems; addresses student needs by using different strategies; and finds techniques and ways to manage student’s behavior in the classroom and at home. They work towards the best ways to solve student problems and situations both in groups or individually; develop educations programs teaching parents and teachers effective learning and teaching strategies; address substance and drug abuse; work with disabled or special talent students; and develop programs on managing and preventing crises.
When it comes to the eligibility process for special education students, they work as an interdisciplinary member of the team and administer achievement, personality, and IQ tests. School psychologists are directly involved in all family and student counseling services. To maintain a healthy school system, they teach lessons on topics such as substance abuse, learning strategies, parenting skills, and other topics when needed. A school psychologist studies any new information on behavior and learning and researches the effectiveness of behavior management procedures and the strength of academic programs. There main areas of work are consultation, evaluation, intervention, prevention, research, and planning. Some of the personal qualities required to be a successful school psychologist include being intrigued with human behavior, excellent verbal and written communication skills, being a good listener, patience, stability, inspires confidence and trust, and works well under pressure.
A school psychologist often finds employment in schools but can practice in a many different settings including hospitals; private practice; universities; both the private and public school systems; state, government, community, and other agencies; and health centers that are school-based. The need for experienced psychologists including school psychologists continues to grow.
